STARTING & FINISHING IN THE CITY OF NEWCASTLE RUN, JOG OR WALK A FULLY SIGNED ALL-TERRAIN ROUTE CELEBRATING THE NORTH EAST, FROM ITS INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE TO TODAY'S RENEWAL AND REINVENTION

ULTRA NORTH explores the industrial history of the North East, offering a unique opportunity to explore the blend of urban, parkland, disused railway lines and woodland trails that the North East has to offer.

Starting and finishing in Newcastle city centre, ULTRA NORTH 55km participants will start their tour of the region just a short distance from Newcastle Central Station on Newcastle Quayside. The area that was once an industrial commercial dockside, after heavy redevelopment now boasts modern culture, music and sport venues, all under the gaze of the iconic Tyne Bridge.

Exiting the Quayside via Scotswood Road, participants will follow the River Derwent through Derwent Valley;  crossing the 150m long Nine Arches Viaduct, once part of the Derwent Valley Railway, that at its peak carried over half a million passengers with a regular goods traffic of coal, iron and timber.

As you pass Derwenthaugh Park, look to the skies and see if you can spot a Northern Kite before being joined by 27.5km participants in Chopwell Wood. A site covering almost 900 acres of the Derwent Valley, making it the largest woodland in Tyne and Wear with a rich history of mining and timber production.

Following the River Tyne through Wylam, you’ll pass the National Trust site and home of railway pioneer George Stephenson before joining the 6 mile Wylam Waggonway route with its beautiful views of the River Tyne.

Returning to Newcastle city centre along a lesser known section of the Hadrian’s Way you’ll pass the Lemington Glass Cone, a brick tower which is all that remains of the premises of the glass works that operated here for two hundred years.

A finish-line close to the city centre awaits you - plenty of options to celebrate with a drink or something to eat – you’ll be assured of a famous Geordie welcome home.

This region was built on strength, grit and determination, with iron and timber in its bones. Discover what you are made of in 2020 and sign up to an ultra challenge today.
